Our rugs mean much more to us than you think, and it’s not just because they’re one of our best selling items. It’s because our rugs have a unique background that not many know. Here are some fun facts about our rugs:
They're handmade!
For over 17 years, our authentic Egyptian organic cotton rugs have been made by a team of expert craftsmen at an organic & fair trade factory in Egypt. The old fashioned looms were constructed right in the same workshop where some of our products are made, like our tool box and veggie crate! You're helping others.
When you buy a rug from Under the Nile, you’re supporting a community that provides comfortable and safe working conditions, as well as health care and child care. We work exclusively with a Certified Fair Trade vendor in Egypt, called Sekem.
They're easy to wash!
Our rugs are machine washable and get softer with every wash. We like to put the smaller ones in the dryer and hang the larger one to dry. Most rugs aren't able to be cleaned so easily, so this is a huge benefit of our rugs!
They come in a great selection.
We have an array colors, ranging from solid off-white to unique patterns and multi-colors. You can mix and match for super funky home décor, or try your best to buy the same one. They’re limited, we never get the same color more than once!
They're a zero waste design product.
They are made of fabric scraps from our clothing production. Our master rug makers in Egypt tie the scraps together to make long strips, and then weave them together by hand on the loom. If you look closely, you can see some prints from previous collections.
Because our rugs are made of scraps, they are very limited! We just received a big shipment, so they are back in stock now! They are sure to sell out quickly, and we only get them in twice a year during Spring and Fall. If there's a color that strikes your fancy, get it now! If you wait, it might be gone by the time you come back!
